This was originally a fishing village with its charming medieval monastery, dedicated to ‘Our Lady of the Forests”, which stands in the middle of the village surrounded by a high wall. Ayia Napa means “The Holy Lady of the Forest” and tradition has it that a Holy Icon of the Virgin was found here in a cave during a hunting expedition and thus the first church was carved out of solid rock in her honor later developing into an Orthodox Church.
