The town of Ayia Napa is situated in the outskirts of Larnaka and has developed into an attractive seaside resort. This was originally a fishing village with its charming medieval monastery, dedicated to ‘Our Lady of the Forests”, which stands in the middle of the village surrounded by a high wall. Ayia Napa means “The Holy Lady of the Forest” and tradition has it that a Holy Icon of the Virgin was found here in a cave during a hunting expedition and thus the first church was carved out of solid rock in her honor later developing into an Orthodox Church.
From being a tiny, sleepy town only a few years ago, Ayia Napa is today one of the most pulsating, vibrant and popular holiday destinations in Europe, and especially known for the fantastic beaches and lively nightlife. The long summer season is ideal for sun worshippers and sea sport lovers, while winter is becoming a haven for nature lovers. Protaras, adjacent to Ayia Napa, provides an untamed natural beauty of Cape Greco and both locations offer a combination of endless possibilities. There are many “to do” things while in this region of the island; either take a cruise, shop, enjoy delicious seafood, relax while sunbathing on one of the many white sandy beaches, hike, bike or walk through nature’s trails of wild flowers and fauna. In the afternoons stroll around trendy cafés, pubs and clubs, meet with the locals who talk candidly and open – heartedly about Ayia Napa; blessed with sunshine, beauty and simple traditions.
